“An Inspector Calls” is a three act play by J. B. Priestly that explores themes of social responsibility and the interconnectedness of society through the investigation of a young woman’s suicide.
Set in April 1912, the play unfolds in the comfortable home of the Birling family, who are celebrating the engagement of their daughter, Sheila, to Gerald Croft. The family consists of Arthur Birling, a prosperous businessman; his wife, Sybil; their son, Eric; and daughter, Sheila. The celebration is interrupted by the arrival of Inspector Goole, who informs them that a young woman named Eva Smith has committed suicide by drinking disinfectant.
