About Gaslight

Founded in 1937 as the Augusta Players, Gaslight Theater is the oldest continuously operating community theater in Maine. We make our home in Hallowell City Hall, One Winthrop Street in Hallowell (map), where we've been performing since the late 1970s.

Gaslight Theater carries forward a long tradition of providing quality live entertainment to the Capital area community. We seek to provide a welcoming venue for artistic expression, education in the theatrical arts, and community engagement.

Performance Schedule

Our regular schedule is four shows a year, usually in late winter, early summer, late summer, and the fall. In our production choices, we aim for a balance among musicals, mysteries, comedies, classics and new or experimental plays. For each show, we have at least six performances over two weekends, recently adding Sunday matinees into the mix.

For the past several years we have produced an evening of one-act plays in the spring to attract new directors and actors who may be looking for a shorter focused commitment. One or more of these plays is our entry into the Maine Association of Community Theaters' One-Act Play Festival. In some years we may produce a special event as a fundraiser; in some years a holiday event.

Community Connection

Gaslight is actively involved in Hallowell and the surrounding Capital area. We are a member of the Hallowell Board of Trade and the Maine Tourism Association, a member of the American Association of Community Theatre, and a founding member of the Maine Association of Community Theaters. We sponsor an annual award for graduating seniors at four area high schools to recognize the dramatic arts, and frequently participate in local festivals such as Old Hallowell Days and Christmas in Old Hallowell.

Gaslight Theater is an all-volunteer organization incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, so all donations are tax-deductible. We have a Board of Directors that runs the organization day-to-day (or week to week) and oversees the business aspects of our productions.

Our financial support is derived from memberships and sponsorships, ticket revenues and special fundraising events. The production and printing of show programs is funded though sale of advertisements in the programs.

We invite you join us — on stage, behind the scenes, or in the audience; as a member, sponsor, or advertiser.
